Strata is the result of an intimate dialogue between the artist and the Clanis, an ancient river that contributed to the flourishing of civilization in this territory. Once considered sacred by the Etruscans, over the centuries the river has been bent by human intervention, and today it has nearly vanished. Drawing from documentary evidence, Di Benedetto explores the ancient course and records the fragmented nature of the contemporary river ecosystem. The poetics of the work stem from the idea that filters, transparencies, opacities, and overlays can restore otherwise invisible stories to the waters: the artist thus entrusts a capacity for investigation to the technological eye, conjuring the ghost of a water body that only the digital nature of the image seems capable of revealing. Strata asks the surfaced water if water can still call themselves Clanis, transforming a quasi-forensic investigation into an intimate confidence with the river.
